While girls have earned roster selections within the Team USBOXLA national program in the past, for the first time in USBOXLA history, an all-female Team USBOXLA roster will be competing against high-level Canadian talent north of the border later this year.

Team USBOXLA will be entering a Bantam (06/07) girls team in the prestigious Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament in Coquitlam, British Columbia from June 5-7.

This is the same highly skilled event the Team USBOXLA boys program has been competing in since 2016, last year capturing silver medals in both the Pee Wee and Bantam divisions. The BC-based box event will be hosting girls-only groups for the first time in the tournament’s history this spring.

“This event is the top box lacrosse tournament in Western Canada, hosting the best ‘A’ caliber teams in BC and Alberta,” said Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse President, Garrett Ungaro. “I have witnessed the skill development of the USBOXLA teams over the past number of years, and they are now competing for medals against our best teams.

“I am extremely excited to now welcome the Team USBOXLA bantam females to our tournament. This is our first year adding female teams, but with the phenomenal growth we are experiencing in female box lacrosse, it was inevitable that we open this top-caliber tournament to the best female box players in Western Canada, and the United States too.”

This history-making roster will be coached by a pair of females who have made a bit of history over the years themselves too. Erica Evans and Troyhann Santos, two highly regarded Canadian players & coaches that have excelled in both field & box lacrosse, will be guiding the Team USBOXLA Bantam girls in British Columbia.

“This is such a big step,” said Evans, who helped Maryland win their 14th national title last year. “Girls box lacrosse has been around in Canada for as long as I can remember.

“Box lacrosse is how I and many of the girls in my area (Peterborough, Ontario) and across the country got into lacrosse. So, by having these talented American girls play the best from Canada, it's a big step. Having this opportunity for them will be a great learning experience to see what it takes, and also to grow the program.

Evans, who also coached girls at last year’s USBOXLA Nationals in Huntington Beach, has witnessed firsthand how impressive the growth of the girls’ game in the United States has been in recent years.

“I'm excited for these girls to get this opportunity to help them grow, not only into great field players or great box players, but into great overall lacrosse players,” Evans added.

The 2020 Team USBOXLA bantam girls will be the first of many significant steps for females in the association’s national program. The plan to expand the all-girls program to additional age groups/divisions for future seasons is already taking place. For more information visit usboxla.com/teamusboxlagirls.
